Dr Pauline Maki

Dr. Pauline M. Maki is Past President of the North American Menopause Society, current Trustee of the International Menopause Society, and Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology and Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and postdoctoral training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the National Institute on Aging. For the past 25 years, she has led a program of research on women and menopause continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She has more than 200 publications on menopause and brain health and is perhaps best known for her early discovery of the neural targets of hormone therapy in women. She won the 2018 Woman in Science Award from the American Medical Women’s Association, the Thomas B. Clarkson Outstanding Clinical and Basic Science Research Award from the NAMS, and the 2022 Faculty of the Year Award from the UIC College of Medicine. She has won a number of NIH awards for her research and service, serves as a research and career mentor to many students and junior faculty, serves on executive committees for several women’s health advisory boards, and is a frequent international and national speaker. Her research addresses important issues in women’s health such as:

  • Do women experience a change in their cognitive abilities, mood and brain function as they transition through the menopause?
  • How do menopausal symptoms and hormonal changes affect cognition and brain function?
  • What hormonal and nonhormonal interventions may be beneficial for cognition and brain function?
