Dry mouth/dental health at menopause

Throughout life, the teeth and gingivae are readily susceptible to hormonal changes, among other contributing factors. Menopause, although physiologic and inevitable, may adversely affect the oral health and hygiene. Previous narrative and systematic reviews have shown that periodontal health followed by dry mouth and burning mouth syndrome are the top three most common conditions experienced by women immediately pre-, during, and post menopause. Hormone replacement therapy, although effective in managing some systemic symptoms, has little to no effect on oral presentations. Here we review some of the most common oral concerns in menopause, their signs and symptoms, how they can be prevented and if possible, how they can be managed.
