Menopause consultation: A structured approach to decision-making

Menopause is defined as the final menstrual period, with perimenopause being the time from when the cycle starts to change until a year after the final menstrual period. Normally women experience menopause between 45 and 55 years, with early menopause from 40-44 and premature menopause under 40 years. During this presentation reference will be made to women at menopause but the author acknowledges that some people who experience menopause do not identify as women.

The perimenopause and menopause are a time of fluctuating hormones and symptoms. In addition, during and after menopause the risk for chronic diseases such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease rises.

Women can present with a variety of concerns at perimenopause and menopause. A structured approach can help ensure that women receive comprehensive care. This includes a discussion of symptoms, education about menopause, prevention and screening activities. Contraceptive needs should be addressed where necessary. A discussion of treatment options including hormonal and non-hormonal options needs to be tailored to the patient’s individual circumstances.
